Alter Egos... by David Nicholas

Animes & mangas, heroes & villains abound
Brace yourself friends, for they amaze and astound
Creative cosplay’s the caper, such complex craft
Dynamic dress done from a devoted draft
Exotic escape from life so damningly dull
For masses taking part, it distracts from the lull
Gruelling process involved behind the curtain
Hobby becomes a passion, now that’s for certain
It all starts out with grabbing the materials
Judiciously, like plucking grains from cereals
Knitting, sewing or forging, done step-by-step
Lifetimes dedicated for such immense prep
Modifying’s next, with modelling if needed
Never hurts to check that you have succeeded
Once that’s all done, it’s time for the convention
People gather ‘round to admire the invention
Quickly you’ll find that the cameras come calling
Round of applause given for details enthralling
Sacrifice worth it as the work takes on a side
That resembles courage, achievement and pride
Under their disguise, they blend in with us lot
Veiled as students, mums and pros, in some melting pot
We will never know when we pass them in the street
‘Xactly as they’d like it, a life quite discreet
Yet when duty calls, they’ll gladly take the chance
Zipping to change rooms, letting inner deities dance.
I hath risen! Finally another poem done after many weeks of study, procrastination and other kinds of BS. =p

The original release date was planned to be around the Supanova weekend a couple of weeks ago, but before you knew it I had to prepare for mid-semester exams! That and a renewed addiction to Dungeon Defenders lately have really held me back some. ^^;

Anyway, what's this about? Well, it's my attempt to explore the fantastic, unique world of cosplay (costume roleplay) through my poetry - an ABC into the craft, the process, what it entails and what it means for the millions who take part in this activity (my guess anyway).

It's an art form that I've grown enamoured with since I came across that incredible Supergirl costume that AlisaKiss created (on Youtube no less), and in the years since, I've found many other tailors and seamstresses who brought characters to life thanks to their work.

I guess in my own small way, this is a shout-out to all those talented folks out there who breathe life into our favourites. As always however, I'd love to hear your thoughts so whether you enjoyed this piece or you believe it needs improvement in any sense, sound off in the comments below, or heck, really go full-bore with a well thought-out critique, and I'll try my hardest to get back to you as soon as I can.

For right now though, duty of my own calls... Feedback ain't gonna give itself, it seems. :work:

Hi, Sean here from We-Poets, stopping by with this obnoxiously overdue critique you requested from our group. :)

Overall, another fun poem! You did it again! :D Just a few small comments:

Gruelling process involved behind the curtain
***Grueling

Knitting, sewing or forging, done step-by-step
***Comma after "sewing"

That resembles courage, achievement and pride
***comma after "achievement"

Veiled as students, mums and pros, in some melting pot
***Comma after "mums"
